Position Details
Tween Advisory Council (TACO) Volunteer
- Must be in grades 3 to 5.
- Will serve in leadership roles within the tween group.
- Drive the direction of tween programming.
- Advise on library collection and services.
- May assist library staff with younger children and families.

- Mentor beginning readers, grades K to 3, through the Reading Buddies Program.
- Reading Buddies is a 4-week reading program that combines reading encouragement and group activities to foster a love of reading and confidence.

Summer Reading Challenge
- Must be between the ages of 14-17.
- Requires people skills and attention to detail.
- Provide program information, help with registration, distribute prizes, and prepare materials.

Archives Volunteer
- Must be at least 15 years old.
- Assist library staff by helping to scan, organize and preserve materials like photographs, historical documents, and maps.
- May assist with curating library displays.

Position Details
Volunteer for Programs Serving Adults with Disabilities
- Prepare and set up materials for games, crafts, and activities, including cutting, pasting, and portioning supplies.
- Move tables and chairs as directed, clean up leftover materials, and wipe down tables after activities.
- Guide attendees to and within the programming area as needed.
- Participate in activities to facilitate engagement and socialization for attendees.
- Gather attendee feedback, and share with the programmer.
Accessible Resources and Services Intern/ Volunteer (Customer Service)
- Prepare mail cards, assemble bags for new customers, update catalog records, and delete titles from the system.
- Contact new customers, assist with yearly account activity checks, and provide reader advisory by placing holds.
- Create engaging, timely content for newsletters and email updates.
- Familiarity with various technology, customer service, and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with two (2) years of applicable experience.
Accessible Resources and Services Intern/ Volunteer (Clerical)
- Assist with Digital Talking Book Machine maintenance and upkeep.
- Print Braille documents (no experience using Braille required) for customers.
- Label and organize digital book cartridges and cases for efficient use.
- Format Large Print and Descriptive DVD lists for customers.
- Ability to follow directions, read and write English, use basic technology, and physically lift, stoop, and stretch to handle materials weighing 1-20 lbs. each.
Technology Services Volunteer
- Ages 18 and up.
- Provide basic technology maintenance, device charging, updates and testing.
- Assemble information packets and kits.
- Assist library staff with data entry, inventory, organization and special projects.
- Requires familiarity with standard technology.

Art Gallery Coordinator
- Provide support to VBPL staff to plan, organize, install and maintain gallery space.
- Be a member of the art selection committee and attend Meet the Artist events.
- Create an annual exhibition schedule and communicate with artists and organizations.
- Help promote and market the gallery around the community.

Technology Education Programming Volunteer
- Ages 18 and up.
- Assist staff with various levels of technology education programing.
- Assemble information packets and kits.
- Requires familiarity with standard technology.
- Experience with technology-based creative arts preferred.
- Requires six month commitment.

Adult Advisory Group Volunteer
- Ages 18 and up.
- Must attend mandatory orientation and respectfully participate in monthly meetings.
- Requires positive interactions with staff and the community.
- Requires understanding and comprehension of oral and/or written directions.

English Language Learner Reading Partner
- Read monthly book selections with an English language learner.
- Engage with your English language learner in reading aloud, practicing pronunciation, and developing vocabulary.

Bilingual Translator
- Assist library staff as they serve residents at community events across the city.
- Communicate library resources and services to children and adults who speak languages other than English.
- Assist VBPL staff during programs and other initiatives in libraries and at off-site locations.

English Conversation Club
- Must be (18) years of age and up.
- Help all levels of non-native speakers gain confidence in speaking English to communicate effectively.
- Lead small conversations and activity groups and talk one-on-one with participants about various topics.
- Ability to effectively communicate as a native speaker of English, including skilled in active listening.
- Knowledge of and interest in people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Knowledge of library resources.
- Has an ESL or ESOL background and/or experience working with diverse populations.

Virginia Beach Public Library accepts volunteer applications from minors who are seeking to complete court-ordered community service.
- Applicants must be between the ages of 12-17.
- Applicants must apply at least eight weeks prior to the deadline for completion of service hours.
- Applicants should include the number of community service hours needed and the deadline for completion.
- If applicable, only applicants who are on unsupervised probation will be considered.
- We will not consider applicants who are seeking community service hours for larceny offenses.
Approval of all court-ordered applicants will be at the discretion of the volunteer services coordinator. The Library need not specify a reason for unapproved applicants.
