First Grade READS is a GrowSmart initiative of Virginia Beach Public Library that pairs trained volunteer reading mentors with first graders who need extra reading support. Early literacy lays the foundation for future academic success, and first grade is a critical moment: Children who aren’t reading on grade level by the end of first grade are far more likely to struggle in later years.
The research is clear:

Studies show the number of words a child knows when entering kindergarten is predictive of early learning success.

A child not reading at grade level by the end of first grade has an 88% chance of not reading at grade level by the end of fourth grade.

Children not reading proficiently by third grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of school.
How the Program Works
Volunteer mentors typically support two students throughout the school year. Mentors meet with each child twice a week for 30 minutes — about two hours each week — during the school day. Sessions are one-on-one and use simple, research-based reading strategies that volunteers learn during training. Each month, students also receive a free book to help them build a home library.
What’s Needed to Become a Volunteer?
- Prior teaching experience is not needed
- Mandatory training is provided, and ongoing coaching is available
- A background check is required

Volunteer mentors must attend one of two in-person training sessions at Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library, 4100 Virginia Beach Blvd.
